Hints on packing your Bedroom and Garage
Packing Bedroom Clothing and Shoes
Packing your bedroom involves more than just putting clothes into boxes. Clothing, shoes, hats, and other personal belongings each require a little preparation to help keep them organized and protected during your move.
The following bedroom packing tips can help you prepare your clothing, shoes, and other belongings for moving day.
Clothing
- Use wardrobe cartons for hanging clothes: Clothing hanging in your closet can remain on hangers and be placed directly into wardrobe cartons.
- Pack folded clothing: If wardrobe cartons are not available, remove clothing from hangers, fold it, and place it in a box lined with packing paper. Suitcases can also be used for folded clothing.
Hats
- Use hatboxes when available: Keep hats in their original hatboxes and place them in large moving boxes.
- Pack hats without hatboxes: If you don’t have hatboxes, fill the inside of each hat with crumpled packing paper. Wrap the hat loosely in paper and place it in a box lined with packing paper.
- Label fragile items: Clearly mark the box “FRAGILE” to help identify boxes containing delicate hats.
Shoes
- Keep shoes in their boxes: If you have the original shoeboxes, leave the shoes inside and pack the shoeboxes in a larger moving box.
- Wrap shoes individually or in pairs: If shoeboxes aren’t available, wrap shoes individually or in pairs before placing them in a box.
- Add cushioning: Use crumpled packing paper around the shoes to provide cushioning and help prevent damage during transit.
Packing Linens And Pillows
Before packing linens and pillows, make sure they are completely dry. This includes towels, sheets, blankets, and other fabric items.
- Keep items dry: Make sure all linens and pillows are thoroughly dry before packing.
- Use plastic bags: Place linens and pillows in plastic bags to help keep them protected.
- Pack in lined cartons: Place the bagged items in moving boxes lined with clean packing paper.
Packing Your Garage/Storage Area
Garages and storage areas often contain a wide variety of tools, equipment, and household items, so sorting and preparing these belongings before moving day can make the packing process easier.
- Remove items that cannot be transported: Before packing, dispose of any items that cannot be moved. See our Do Not Pack list!
- Group similar items: Sort belongings into groups based on similar shapes, sizes, or uses to help keep your garage and storage items organized.
- Bundle long-handled tools: Securely bundle long-handled items such as brooms, rakes, and shovels together. These items do not need to be placed in boxes.
- Pack items in toolboxes: Tools can remain in their toolboxes. Fill empty spaces with crumpled packing paper and make sure the toolbox is securely closed.
- Prepare power tools: Remove attachments from power tools and pack them separately. Wrap and tape sharp edges with extra packing paper or old towels to help prevent injuries and damage.
- Clean trash cans: Clean and thoroughly dry trash cans before moving them.
- Weapons, ammunition, and hazardous materials: All American Moving will not transport weapons, ammunition, or hazardous materials. This includes items such as propane tanks for outdoor grills, gasoline for lawnmowers, and similar materials.
- Designate a primary contact: Please designate one person to make final decisions during the move. All American Moving will also designate one crew member to serve in the same capacity, helping keep communication clear throughout the moving process.
