When Packing for a Move
Improper packing is one of the most common causes of damage during a move. Using the right packing techniques can help protect your belongings and make your move smoother and more efficient.
Keep these essential packing tips in mind:
- Keep each box under 50 pounds to make lifting safer and easier.
- Line the bottom of every box with a few inches of crumpled packing paper for cushioning.
- Secure all items so they do not shift during transit.
- Fill empty spaces with packing paper to prevent movement and protect fragile items.
- Use extra cushioning for delicate or breakable items.
- Cover sharp edges, corners, and rims to avoid damage.
- Avoid overpacking. Boxes should not bulge on the sides or top.
- Pack heavier items in smaller boxes, especially books, CDs, and DVDs.
- Always place heavier items at the bottom and lighter items on top.
- Pack similar items together to stay organized.
- Do not mix fragile items with heavy objects in the same box.
- Use plenty of packing materials. Do not cut corners.

What Not to Pack for a Move

- Valuables such as securities, jewelry, cash, coin or stamp collections, and important legal documents should not be placed on the moving van. These items should be transported with you or shipped using a traceable and insured carrier, such as UPS or FedEx.
- For jewelry in particular, remove all items from armoires, cabinets, or furniture before moving day, since most moving companies do not transport loose or unsecured pieces.
- To stay organized, consider packing smaller valuables in compartment containers, such as egg cartons, to prevent tangling or damage.
- Irreplaceable items, including family photos and personal keepsakes, should always travel with you since they may have little or no insurable value.
- You may also want to transport sensitive items, such as furs, yourself, as changes in temperature and humidity during transit can cause damage.
Do Not Pack List
There are certain items that cannot be transported on a moving truck due to safety regulations. These items should be properly disposed of or transported separately.
Do not pack the following:

- Perishable food items
